The world of contemporary art continues to flourish with new innovations and developments at one of Miami's finest international art museums. The Museum of Contemporary Art features an interesting blend of both elite and emerging talent, displaying international masterpieces and local artistic works. The jewel of the museum, however, lies in the architecture of the facility itself. Erected in February 1996, this spectacular structure is bound to seduce any contemporary art buff with its jagged surfaces, moveable walls, and high-rise ceilings.
Once visitors get passed the lavish entrance, designed to suit South Florida's tropical taste, the museum offers 12,000 square-feet of exhibition space. Each year, the museum presents at least eight exhibits with themes ranging from cultural identity issues to Surrealist explorations to the illusions of light and space. Occasionally, the permanent collection serves as the basis for the museum's exhibits, featuring paintings, photographs, sculptures, and more.
In an effort to provide valuable learning resources, the museum hosts a number of educational programs for all ages. Aside from promoting the contemporary arts through lectures and workshops, the museum encourages an appreciation for both visual and performing arts. One of the more popular monthly programs is, "Music at MoCA."
