Learning is a blast at this nationally recognized science center, which has more than 140 hands-on exhibits, a wildlife center that is home to 150 live animals, and a 230-seat planetarium where visitors can explore the universe.
From robotic dinosaurs to virtual-reality basketball, There's something for everyone at the Miami Museum of Science. Visitors can metamorphose into TV meteorologists, tap the power of fully-loaded CD-ROM computers, and hold global video conferences. Picking up pointers on physics, electricity, sound, light, health, and South Florida's unique ecology can be amazingly fun.
Established in 1950 by the Junior League of Miami as a children's science museum, it grew quickly and moved a few times. It is now located on three acres of the historic Vizcaya complex under a long-term lease with Dade County. The Space Transit Planetarium was constructed in 1966 and soon became the world's leading facility of its kind. Now the museum, which started in a house and later moved to the Miami Women's Club building, is reaching new heights. In association with the Smithsonian Institute, the Miami Museum of Science is in the process of creating the country's first international science center. And, in a nod to its role as the crossroads of the hemisphere, the Science Center of the Americas will use multilingual presentations and cutting edge technology to explore South Florida's unique linkages to the people and environments of the Caribbean and Latin America.
Currently, the planetarium offers international television programming. There is a free live star show every Friday at 7:30 p.m. And, weather-permitting, you can see the moon and the stars through telescopes in the observatory Fridays from 8:00-10:00 p.m. The museum, which has handicapped access, takes about three hours to go through and is great for a rainy day.
